Carlos Creus Moreira is a prominent Swiss entrepreneur, tech pioneer, and the founder of cybersecurity company WISeKey. Born in Spain in 1958, Moreira lived in several counties like Switzerland , Thailand and Australia . He began his career as an United Nations expert before moving into the private sector tech industry.
“I had the privilege of starting my career with the United Nations, serving as a CyberSecurity and Trust Models Expert for 16 years (1983–1999). This period was a transformative time in technology, aligning with the dawn of the World Wide Web at CERN in Geneva. I was at the forefront of the digital revolution, starting from its very inception. During my tenure, I visited over 160 countries and lived across various continents including short stints in Africa, South America, and Asia, along with longer periods in Thailand and Australia with my family. This journey with the United Nations not only shaped the course of my career but also transformed my understanding of the world. As a UN Expert on CyberSecurity and Trust Models, I was positioned at the very cusp of the digital revolution, a revolution that was just beginning to touch the corners of the globe. It was the early 1980s, and the World Wide Web was taking its first breaths . During this transformative period, many countries were witnessing the arrival of computers and internet connectivity for the first time.
The impact was immediate and profound. In remote villages and bustling cities alike, I saw eyes widen in wonder as the first computers flickered to life, revealing a world beyond borders.
The internet became a window and a bridge — a tool through which knowledge could flow freely from one corner of the earth to another. As I facilitated the setup of these groundbreaking technologies, I saw firsthand the thirst for knowledge and connectivity.
In each country, we focused on not just installing technology, but also educating the local population. Workshops and training sessions became a staple of my visits, as we aimed to empower people not just with tools, but with the knowledge to use them. It was about building capacity, not dependency. This approach turned technology into a catalyst for development, sparking economic growth and enabling countries to participate more fully in the global dialogue.
The transformation was nothing short of miraculous. Regions that had been isolated by geography and circumstance were now participants in a global economy, their voices amplified by digital connectivity. In schools, children who had never seen a computer were now learning to navigate the internet, their curiosity unlocking endless possibilities.
Yet, with great power came great responsibility. As these nations embraced technology, they also faced new challenges — issues of privacy, security, and inequality emerged. My role evolved, as I not only introduced these tools but also engaged in discussions on how to use them responsibly. We debated and designed frameworks that would ensure these new digital spaces remained free, fair, and beneficial for all.”
